The
pigmented cells in the skin of squid, octopi and cuttlefish are called
chromatophores. The chromatophores are under muscular and neurological
control, and they can change in size as well as color intensity, which
is why these animals ca
n brilliantly
camouflage and change their appearance so dramatically. So what happens
when you insert an electrode into the fin nerve of a squid and hook it
up to some groovy tunes on an ipod nano? Dancing chromatophores!
